The Millbrook Inn at South Pool is celebrating after scooping a second major award in less than six weeks. At Thursday’s Devon Tourism Awards which took place at a glittering ceremony in the Great Hall of the University of Exeter, the pub was awarded Gold in the Best Pub Category, following on from its recent Gold at the South Devon Tourism & Hospitality Awards.
Tucked away in the heart of the South Hams, the pub is renowned for the superior quality of its food, and a visit to the Millbrook Inn is on the bucket list for many visitors to the area, as well as being at the hub of the local community.
Owner Charlie Baker said: “We are so proud of all the team at the Millbrook and winning this award is just wonderful, and quite a surprise as we were up against some tough competition. We strive to be a “real’ pub with simple community values where we take our localness to the limit. We’d like to thank everyone who winds down the lanes or sails up the creek to visit us and enjoy the incredible food we serve in a warm and welcoming atmosphere and it is thanks to them that we continue to thrive.”
At the helm in the kitchen for the past nine years is Head Chef Jean-Philippe Bidart whose inspiring menus advocate nose to tail eating with his ingredients meticulously sourced, wherever possible, from the Devon landscape.
He said: “This is such an incredible achievement for all the team. To win an award of this calibre, and for the second time as we also won in 2014, takes hard work and a commitment to excellence. Devon has such a fine reputation for the impressively high number of quality places that there are to eat, and to win is a wonderful achievement.”
Charlie and his wife Tessa took over the pub in June. Less than three weeks later it suffered a catastrophic flood which resulted in thousands of pounds worth of damage. The local community rallied and Just Giving page was set up, saving the pub from closure.
Charlie said: “We were overwhelmed with the support we received from the community and how much people really do hold the pub very dear in their heart. We feel very privileged to be working with such a great team and it is all credit to them that we have won this award.”
